Who is Tanksy?

by Bev Katz Rosenbaum

tagged: school & education, politics & government, non-classifiable
Description

Fourteen-year-old Tanya Kofsky is invisible.

She hates that no one listens to her, at home or at her new school. So as student elections get underway, Tanya starts secretly painting controversial images on the walls of the school. Soon everyone is talking about this amazing artist with a lot to say. The election results turn out to be a catalyst for more rebellion. And not just from students. Teachers, tired of the principal's authoritarian leadership, start promoting self-expression. Even the lunch ladies join in, ignoring the strictly controlled menu and serving more nutritious and culturally diverse fare. But can this revolution effect real change? Or will speaking up lead to complete disaster?

This short novel is a high-interest, low-reading level book for middle-grade readers who are building reading skills, want a quick read or say they don’t like to read!

“A compelling quick read due to her clever dialogue and Tanya’s winning personality.”

— Resource Links

“Modern, politically engaged and fun, Who is Tanksy?, is a great read with potential to light that spark in the leaders and activists of tomorrow, carries the powerful message that change can truly come from anywhere.”

— CM: Canadian Review of Materials

"An amazing book for tomorrow's leaders...Who is Tanksy has a big connection with fake news and political corruption. It would be a great book to use to discuss these ideas with a class."

— Canadian Children's Book Centre (CCBC) Canadian Children’s Book News, student takeover edition

“Readers will enjoy discussing this book in class since it has issues of right and wrong and the gray area in between. The plot development is quick but the author brings the story together well and develops her characters just enough for the satisfaction of hi/lo readers who need to feel successful with a book that does not overwhelm.”
