The Canada goose, a beloved cultural symbol for Canadians, is the inspiration for this story for children. It starts near the pulp mill at Powell River, BC, the unlikely spot where two mother Canada geese decide to lay their eggs. Some of the goslings are hatched in an incubator, then end up at a stump ranch where they decide that Crocus the Chinese weed-eating gander is their mother. One fine day a wild cousin from the north comes to visit and there is much food for thought about wildness and tameness, and the differences.

About the Authors

Anne Cameron (August 20, 1938 – November 30, 2022) was born in Nanaimo, BC. She began writing at an early age, starting with theatre scripts and screenplays. In 1979, her film Dreamspeaker, directed by Claude Jutra, won seven Canadian Film Awards, including best script. After being published as a novel, Dreamspeaker went on to win the Gibson Award for Literature. She has published more than 30 books, including the underground classic Daughters of Copper Woman, its sequel, Dzelarhons, novels, stories, poems and legends–for adults and children. Her most recent novels are Family Resemblances, Hardscratch Row, and a new, revised edition of Daughters of Copper Woman.

June Huber, daughter of a Swedish boatbuilder, was born on Vancouver Island and remains a true west coaster. She started painting seriously at the age of twelve, and she is best known for her lush, beautifully detailed watercolour paintings, which have been shown in Powell River, other west coast communities, Toronto and Vancouver. The Tantalus Gallery in Powell River mounted a ten-year retrospective of her work in May 1991. For the past eleven years, Huber has taught art classes through the Adult Education department at Malaspina College in Powell River.
