BC Books Online was created for anyone interested in BC-published books, and with librarians especially in mind. We'd like to make it easy for library staff to learn about books from BC publishers - both new releases and backlist titles - so you can inform your patrons and keep your collections up to date.
Our site features print books and ebooks - both new releases and backlist titles - all of which are available to order through regular trade channels. Browse our subject categories to find books of interest or create and export lists by category to cross-reference with your library's current collection.
A quick tip: When reviewing the "Browse by Category" listings, please note that these are based on standardized BISAC Subject Codes supplied by the books' publishers. You will find additional selections, grouped by theme or region, in our "BC Reading Lists."
While individuals within the Methodist and Congregational Churches had doubts about Church Union, only among the Presbyterians did organized collective action against the union and the legislation that created the United Church of Canada develop. N. Keith Clifford documents the origins, growth and significance of the resistance which saw 150,000 Presbyterians refuse to join the new church.
Past studies of the union concluded with its consummation in 1925. Viewing the controversy from the perspective of the 1939 amendment to the United Church of Canada Act, which finally accepted the Presbyterian claims on the identity and continuity of their church, alters the standard images of the parties in the conflict and demonstrates that there are two quite distinct ways of understanding the events and the actions based on them.
N. Keith Clifford is a member of the religious studies department at the University of British Columbia.
