Fraser Bear

A Cub's Life

by Maggie De Vries, illustrated by Renné Benoit

tagged: bears, environment
Description

A true-to-life nature story for young readers, from the multi-award-winning creators of Tale of a Great White Fish.

This moving, beautifully illustrated story follows a black bear cub's life in the Pacific Northwest from his birth to his first salmon catch, uniting the cycles of bear and fish. A map and further information about bears and salmon are included.

The book is based on a top-selling plush toy named Fraser Bear, created by the Pacific Salmon Foundation and Rocky Mountaineer Vacations. This toy, holding a salmon in his mouth, is sold on RMV's trains and through their souvenir catalogue, with sales benefitting the PSF. The book will become a must-have addition to all toy purchases.

Editorial Reviews

"This book is highly educational without seeming so. The text is concise and interesting, and the illustrations are subtle and captivating. The glossary, map, and notes on black bears and Chinook salmon in the back of the book are an additional bonus for older children."

— San Francisco Book Review

"There is science aplenty here -- in the season-by-season growth and development of the cub -- all fascinating stuff for junior biologists, but it's the art, both prose and painting, that takes this book to a fine and high plateau. In an example of perfect complementarity, author and illustrator have worked their magic: Maggie de Vries deftly weaves an engrossing and often suspenseful tale out of the facts, while Renne Benoit's paintbrush provides full-colour visuals of bear, salmon, river, meadow and forest, which make the spirit soar."
