BC Books Online was created for anyone interested in BC-published books, and with librarians especially in mind. We'd like to make it easy for library staff to learn about books from BC publishers - both new releases and backlist titles - so you can inform your patrons and keep your collections up to date.
Our site features print books and ebooks - both new releases and backlist titles - all of which are available to order through regular trade channels. Browse our subject categories to find books of interest or create and export lists by category to cross-reference with your library's current collection.
A quick tip: When reviewing the "Browse by Category" listings, please note that these are based on standardized BISAC Subject Codes supplied by the books' publishers. You will find additional selections, grouped by theme or region, in our "BC Reading Lists."
This second enlarged edition of Gérard Tougas' Checklist is essentially a primary bibliography of French-Canadian literature from the nineteenth century to 1968. The Checklist, containing over 2800 titles, represents the holdings of the University of British Columbia Library. The UBC collection comprises a substantial portion of the total body of work published in this field. Included are books, pamphlets and microfilms.
In this bibliography, the term literature has been interpreted to include separately published chronicles, literary criticism, biographies, and folklore as well as novels, poetry, drama and short stories. The second edition has been expanded to include bibliographies and theses.
Gérard Tougas, Professor of French Language and Literature at the University of British Columbia, specializes in the study of francophone literatures. The first edition of A Checklist of Printed Materials relating to French-Canadian Literature dates from 1958. In 1960 his Histoire de la littérature canadienne-française contemporaine appeared, and the fifth edition will be published at the end of 1973. His other works include: Littérature romande et culture français which analyzes the novelists and poets of French Switzerland; La Francophonie en peril, a comparative study of French and English-speaking African authors, and Littérature canadienne-française contemporaine. In his latest work, Les écrivans d'expression française devant la France, Professor Tougas has made a study of the francophone authors of Africa, the Middle East, Madagascar, Mauritius and Réunion, Indochina, the Antilles, and Canada which underlines the dynamism of contemporary French literatures.
