About the Authors

Eric Walters

ERIC WALTERS, a former elementary school teacher, is one of Canada’s most popular authors for children and young adults. He has written more than seventy books that together have won more than a hundred awards, and talks to hundreds of young people in schools and libraries across the country each year. Sue Todd is an award-winning illustrator living in Toronto. She is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University). Sue began her career as a freelance designer in retail advertising. For a more creative outlet, she took up linoleum carving, an ancient printmaking technique similar to woodcut, and developed a unique style of art that led to a career in illustration. Sue has created images for a wide range of clients, from advertising and corporate to editorial and publishing. She is currently working on writing and illustrating her own stories.

Heather Gould is an entrepreneur, artist and voice actor from Victoria, British Columbia.

Editorial Reviews

"Stunning, animated linoleum images featuring heavy black lines, vibrant colors, and a range of familiar and not-so-familiar critters make this ABC book one that children will request again and again."

— School Library Journal

"What a creative way to introduce young children to the richness of African wildlife!"

— Canadian Children's Book Centre (CCBC) Canadian Children’s Book News

"An African Alphabet has much more to teach than just the ABCs. It takes the child on an African safari of sorts, bringing animals alive in the text and illustrations, especially animals that are new or unfamiliar to the child/reader...Learning about animals in this vibrant and delightful book will take readers on an adventure to Africa from the comfort of their chair!...A delightful book for children of all ages, and maybe some adults too!"

— Resource Links

"An African Alphabet is at once a typical introductory alphabet board book, and, at the same time, it is nontraditional...it is unlikely that young viewers...will have had personal experience with any (or many) of the 26 birds and mammals within its pages...A true highlight of the book are the illustrations rendered by Sue Todd who has chosen linoleum carving as her illustration medium...An African Alphabet is an excellent alphabet book and merits both home purchase and acquisition by libraries serving its intended young audience."

— CM: Canadian Review of Materials

"Walters draws on his abiding love of Africa for his latest offering, which takes readers to the savannah without the lengthy plane ride…Strong black lines and saturated colour offer striking visual interest."

— Quill & Quire

★ "An elegant African bestiary, from the familiar to the exotic. This eye-catching compendium of African fauna should delight young readers and instill an awareness of Earth's diversity of habitat and species…gorgeous, brightly colored artwork…brings these creatures to life...Images are clear and easily grasped; each is a striking work of art in itself. Even the alphabetic characters have the etched, stylized calligraphic look of block printing. A gorgeous alphabet for young adventurers."

— Kirkus Reviews, starred review

"The engaging features of the animals and the beautiful colors are a visual feast. And there is pleasure to be had just in pronouncing the exotic animal names."

— Youth Services Book Review
