The Story of Island Copper

by Craig Aspinall

tagged: mining, natural resources, corporate & business history
Description

In the mid-1800s, Scottish and Welsh miners came by boat and pack train to the shores of Rupert Inlet, on Vancouver Island's northern tip. Scheduled to dose in 1995, the Island Copper Mine has produced tonnes of copper concentrate, molybdenum, gold and silver.

At its peak, the mine employed some 900 men and women from around the world. In this book they describe in their own words how they built the mine and the community, how their unique extracting and waste-disposal practices made them world leaders in mining and environmental technology, how they weathered two economic recessions, and how they carried their expertise to points all over the globe.
